Planting and counting seeds

This week in outdoor learning we have been counting sunflower seeds into packets of 10. We will sell the seeds at a plant sale after half term for 20p a packet.

After we counted the seeds and made the seed packets we planted some seeds in pots inside.

We planted 2 seeds in each pot.  Then we counted in 2's to see how many we had planted altogether.

How much money do you think we will make at the plant sale?

What things should we buy for the garden with the money?

Bird spotting

This week we went bird spotting for RSPB National BIG Schools Bird Watch.  It was really exciting!
We spotted lots of different birds.  We even spotted a parakeet on one of the days.

We had to look very carefully and listen for sounds of the birds tweeting.

Can you spot the Robin in the tree?

We took pictures of birds with the ipads and practiced labelling them using an app called Skitch.  It was a bit tricky at first but we are getting the hang of it.

Have you spotted any other birds this week?  I spotted a very large Jay in the reception playground when all the children had gone home.  Keep your eyes open and you might spot it too.

Year 1 - Exploring and planning the garden

This week year 1 had their first outdoor learning session.  They really enjoyed learning what was growing in the garden and searching for signs of spring.  We talked about what plants need to grow well and why it is important to remove any weeds.

The children counted the daffodil shoots poking out of the ground.

We dug up the weeds and put them in the compost bin.

While we were digging we found a few creatures.  We were excited to find this big wiggly worm.

We estimated how long it was and measured it using the ruler.  It was a bit tricky as the worm was not very straight.  Can you see how big the worm was ?

After exploring the garden we talked about what we would like to grow in it.  We took a vote and create some graphs.

 Amaryllis class group 1
 Amaryllis class group 2
 Buttercup class group 1

Buttercup class group 2
We talked about what each graph showed and read them using the different scales.  Some of the graphs count up in two and some count in fives, so we had to look carefully to read them.

What was your groups favourite vegetable?
What was your groups least favourite vegetable?
Which vegetable was the most popular in Crocus class group 1?
Which vegetables were the least popular in Amaryllis class group 2?

Are there any other fruit or vegetables you would like us to grow? Have you grown any fruit or vegetables before?
