Year 2 Investigating bird feeders

To encourage more birds to school we are planning to make our own bird feeders.  We investigated bird feeders around school to give us some ideas. We looked carefully at what the were made of and their properties.

This gave us some ideas of our own.

How will you make your bird feeder? What will you bring to school to help you make it?

    1. Oli Great Fire class are going to be starting to make bird feeders to hang around school. Don't forget to bring in the materials you need. What materials did you plan to use? What properties do the materials you've chosen have?

  2. I would make my bird feeder by using a water proof bottle on top of rigid wood. Then I would cut a hole in the bottle on the side. After to put the wood in the ground you dig a hole then stand the bird feeder up right and cover with soil to holed in place. I would bring in a transparent bottle and strong wood. Even I would take pebbles to put around my bird feeder. I will also bring in bird seeds.

  3. Well done Zaynah some fantastic ideas with great scientific vocabulary. How will you join your bottle to the stick? Where will you position your bird feeder to ensure the most birds visit it?

    1. What properties do plastic milk bottles have? Why will they make good bird feeders?

    2. I will cut off the top of the milk bottle so the birds can get to the food or water more easily.

  6. Maariya you are right there has been a decline in the number of blue tits. This may be caused by new houses being built in green spaces or intensive farming. There are still lots around so they are not likely to become extinct yet. I often see blue tits in the trees and bushes along the side of the field. They are very small so they are harder to spot than seagulls and blackbirds. If you look carefully you will see some. Making our bird feeders will help. If you make it with small holes this will stop the bigger birds like seagulls and pigeons taking all the food and let the blue tits get some.
What other birds have you spotted Maariya?

  9. I would make my bird-feeder out of wood and metal to make it
strong and put a hole in the top. I will tie some wire over the top so that
It can hang from a tree. I will paint it bright colours so all the birds can see.

  10. I will make my bird feeder water proof so it doesn't break or the bird's won't come. For the material I would use plastic bottle and wood.
